Themeless 115

Purple corn, [36 Down] La Carolina, Quito, Ecuador, Sept. 2022

Words: 70

Average Length: 5.34

The seeds for today’s puzzle were 33 Across (snarky clue included) and 8 Down (a “wrong” answer in a trivia game a few months ago, the same game that gave me the clue/answer to 42 Down).

By the way, Flossie and Freddie in 16 Across come from the “Bobbsey Twins” series of children’s books, which were all the rage around 60 years ago.  (Their older twin siblings were Bert and Nan.)

As usual, so much to appreciate here, Jeff! I’m one of your audience members that remembers the Bobbsey Twins, though I gravitated to other ‘literature’ of the era (Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, along with works by 9D). To borrow one of your grid entries, TIL 19A and 59A (the last was particularly interesting to this nerd). Happy to see both 60A and 1D, a favorite role of a favorite actor (going back to Homicide: Life On The Street). Such fun/clever clues: 33A, 37A, 44A, 56A, 9D, 10D, and 53D.

Thanks, Jeanne – I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! I particularly appreciate your calling out specific clues – I spend a lot of time trying to come up with quirky/snarky/clever/amusing clues and it’s nice to seem them noted!
