Today’s puzzle is my entry into the Crosshare monthly midi contest for April, whose theme is “cryptozoology.”  Warnings: Dad jokes ahead and some assembly required.

Ouch! I flailed horribly in the SW corner and couldn’t figure out the relationship between 27A, 27D and 29D. I didn’t understand the clue for 29…? For 28D, I was picturing spreadsheets, in which cells are parts of rows and not the other way around. I’m guessing I was parsing the clue incorrectly. Having said all of that, I love what you did with the theme, playing with it in both senses of ‘crypto’. So, so clever. And great Dad puns as well. Favorite clues = 2D and 17D. And to top it off, TIL what a chupacabra is (and, therefore, really appreciated the clue for 9D)!

Arrgh! I’ve once again confused my downs and acrosses. 27D and 29D crossreference, not 27A and 29D. If a doctor who treats herself has a fool for a patient, then a cruciverbalist who proofs his own work is just as foolish. I’ve also gone back and changed the clue for 28D. Thanks for solving and, as always, for the detailed comments!
