Today’s puzzle is straightforward, so I’ll devote the write-up to two musical links. The first, “Girlfriend Is Better” (see 17 Across) is from the Talking Heads. I saw the movie in 17 Across half a dozen times after it came out. The second, Chick Corea’s brilliant “Spain,” features Bill Watrous on 3 Down, along with Hubert Laws on flute, George Benson on guitar, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on drums, and Corea on keyboards. Please listen to the whole thing – if you’re like me, it’ll energize you face for hours – but definitely check out Watrous’s solo (its starts at 2:42) if you want to be amazed at what can be done with a 3 Down.

You know, I’m not sure I ever realized that 17A was contained in the lyrics to “Girlfriend Is Better”! I have very clear memories of taking a break from studying for an exam in medical school and watching 17A (via VCR) with some friends/classmates. David Byrnes’ enormous white jacket was a source of fascination. A classic concert film. And I enjoyed the video of “Spain”, not only the music but the look: major 70s 14A.
As for the puzzle, great theme idea and entries, with the bonus of the crossings at 59A/50D. TIL 47D. Favorite clues = 26A, 36A, 52A, 10D and 43D. I’m not sure I understand the second half of the clue for 24A…?

Thank you, Jeanne. You’re so right about the ’70s look! For 24A, if you average out a B (3.0) and two Cs (2.0 each), you get 2.33.
